Our History

In 1974, a group of sixteen persons met at the home of Eldon and Nyona Erickson to discuss organizing a new church in Johnson County with the encouragement of a Covenant Planning Committee.  In September, Rev. Quentin Larson arrived as the nucleus builder for the area. Fellowship meetings continued through 1975, and Sunday morning worship services began in the fall of 1975 at the King’s Cove office building.

In July of 1976, Dr Wayne Stark became pastor of this growing congregation.  That summer 10 acres of land was purchased on Quivira Road north of 75th Street through cooperative efforts of the Midwest Conference and the Covenant denomination.  The 101 members of the congregation moved to a multipurpose facility on the site on October 21, 1978.

The church grew quickly during Stark's ministry.  Worship attendance was two hundred and fifty-six in 1982. Illness forced his resignation in 1989, and Tom Anderson became Senior Pastor in 1990. Under Pastor Tom’s leadership, the church continued to grow in attendance to well over 500 and greatly expanded it's educational facilities. In 1997, we were pleased to send a core group of seventy-five people to plant our daughter church, Harvest Ridge. God continued to be faithful by bringing new people and new life into our midst.

In 2002, Community Covenant began a child care ministry. This work has grown and continues now as a ministry for Pre-K, Preschool and Little Learners with 18 classes and 125 children with ages 18 months through 6 years.

In September of 2005, Community Covenant took a giant step of faith and relocated to the present facilities in Lenexa. The challenges of the move have deepened our dependence on the Lord and have helped us as we continue to mature in our spiritual lives and extend God’s love to our community.

Pastor Anderson retired at the end of 2007.  The church welcomed Reverend Johan Tredoux as Senior Pastor in October 2008 following his service as Interim Pastor.  We appreciate his strong biblical teaching and spiritual leadership.

Through these years, we have been richly blessed by the people who have been called to our midst as ministerial staff.  At this time, Pastor Jessica Springer is our Family Pastor, Pastor Tom Greenwald is our Next Generation Pastor for Middle School, High School and College-age ministries and Lay Pastor Bob Watson encourages Prayer Ministries.
